Bone
Imolant for lost bony support
What can be done to
preserve existing bone and add lost bone ? Preservation 5-10%
of bone is lost in the first year after an extraction and a
further 2% a year thereafter. It
is beneficial to implant bone at the time of tooth loss, to reduce bony loss
and preserve as much ridge as possible. This
is done by packing bone particles into the socket at the time of extraction. A
collagen membrane may be used to protect the implant. Several
types of bone are available, including uman bone, artificial bone and, best of
all, the patient's own bone. If
not enough bone exists to permit a dental implant (or to seat a denture)
then ridge augmentation can replace missing bone. This may be as blocks of
bone or bone particles. New
bone may be held in place by titanium screws or using membranes.
When
vertical bone is lost to an expanding nasal sinus. new
bone
may be added by simultaneously pushing the sinus membrane up
and placing bone particles in its place. Small
amounts may be achieved. enough for single implants through the implant drill
hole : closed sinus lift; For larger amounts and multiple implants, a more extensive surgery:
open sinus lift surgery is necessary.
